A couple of months ago I was listening to the fantastic In the Doghouse radio show, presented by Nando Brown and Donna Saunders and they interviewed Jennifer Shryock, founder of the Family Paws Parent Education (FPPE). Jennifer, owner of 2 dogs and mother of 4 children, was enthusiastically explaining about her two programmes, Dogs & Storks and the Dog & Baby Connection.
Dogs & Storks
The Dogs & Storks programme is all about educating expecting families with dogs for how best to prepare themselves for life with a baby and their dogs! It is about offering practical solutions for preparation and training to prevent or manage any possible problems.
Dog & Baby Connection
The Dog & Baby Connection is a programme that aims to educate and help families with dogs and toddlers in the home to create a safe and harmonious home! Again the programme is about offering positive and practical solutions to the issues and challenges that can arise in families with dogs.
I found Jennifer’s enthusiasm for the programmes infectious and had to look them up to find out more. Jennifer offers mentorships to dog trainers who are looking to specialise in Dog and Baby relationships and it didn’t take me long to decide that I wanted to sign up! I loved the fact that rather than criticising parents about allowing poor interactions between children and their dogs that can so often end in tragedy, the programme focuses on educating parents and on preparation, management and training to try to promote safe child and baby relationships – it is just such a positive programme geared towards the one thing that can really help reduce incidents between dogs and children, education!
I began the mentorship in June and have already learned so much from Jennifer. I will publish more details on my site in due course as I near the end of the mentorship, but in the meantime, if you are expecting and you would like to talk to me about preparing you and your dogs for your new arrival, or if you are worried about interactions between your dog and toddler, do get in touch for a chat.
